How Many fights do you need to compete in amateur tournaments?
How many fights do I need to compete in my city's local golden glove tournament at my weight of 168lbs? Is there a weight class of 168lbs at the amateur level?

- It depends where you hail from. Golden Gloves bouts are usually fought between that city or states' two best performed fighters in each weight class for that year or season. I fought in my state's (W.A. Australia) GG tournament in my 5th fight. 168 lbs would make you a super-middleweight (160lbs - 168lbs) which has the likes of Mikkel Kessler & Joe Calzaghe ruling the division in the Pro ranks. (actually santana, i fought in two GG tournaments and won both aswell as two state titles, all at heavyweight.. ;-))
- Devon ~ You don't need any. A lot of fighters that fight in the Golden Glove Tournament the first is their first fight. You'd be in the Novice Division if you're older than 22 you'll be in the Senior Novice Division. Go for it man. You seem like you're biting at the bit and ready to go. You'll never know unless you try it. There's nothing like being able to say "I'm a Golden Glove Champion" everyone else can only say "I fought in the Golden Gloves." Good luck Devon and thanks for the question.
- There is a guy in my gym who fights at 168 lbs. He won the Golden Gloves championship last year. He had many fights before he registered for that tournament. However, the weight categories are usually divided between novice (under age 21 with less than 10 fights), senior novice (over age 21, but not over 35 years of age; same number of fights), open (those with more than 10 fights), and masters (those 35 years of age and older). The officials go by the fights that you have listed in your USA Amateur Boxing license. You must have that license book either before you register or some areas will allow for you to register for the Gloves and get your license at the same time. Keep in mind that some fights you participate in will not be recorded in the license book because they aren't sanctioned by the USA Amateur Boxing Association. For example, I know that park district boxing show fights aren't counted in Chicago, but show fight bouts are.
- You don't need any fights, I have heard of guys having their first competitive fight in the city golden gloves tournament, but like anything else, some experience is always a plus. Good luck.
