  1. hapkido and aikido is great for self defense, muay thai is great for attacking someone, bjj will get your ass kicked in a street fight, traditional tkd is great but there is one good school out of a million in usa, so try this website http://www.steelknuckle.com/
  2. As for the guy that answered this question above me, he is incorrect. I am a 3rd Degree Black Belt In Hapkido, And i also train Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. And in my experiences BJJ is a far more superior sport. In MMA you don't see many fighters using traditional Asian martial arts. Rarely actually. Hapkido teaches you street defense, mostly against an untrained person. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu uses control of your oppononent, and opens up oppurtunties to strike your oppononent. Hapkido is great, i have to admit i have been training for a long time, but a mix of BJJ and Muay Thai, is far more superior in a street fight. Period.
  3. You need to know both striking and grappling, here are some suggestions for you to learn: For striking: muay thai, boxing, sanshou, kyokushin and shidokan karate. For grappling: judo, brazilian jiujitsu, wrestling, sambo. good luck!
  4. don't listen to the rest of the guys, all styles can do is help you. but honestly in a street fight it is for fighting for your life. street fighting is dangours because anything goes. if you want to just get out of the fight and leave in peace. It might be a awful thing to do, but it is to survie, then kick the man in the groin. I know it is a bad thing to do, but it is a street fight where anythign goes. if not , try to break the persons noise, because it will dais him, and give you a good sec of opening to land punches or whatever you need to do. in street fights, fights don't last more then a min. and if they do it is because the people are danceing around. In street fights your are gonna fight alot of people who don't know how to fight and just throw punches. But never underestimeate anyone, because even the smallest person can beat someone. Try to avoid fighting on the street because, there are no holds bar, and anything can happen. Avoid fighting on the street, because that is a greater chance of death then a controlled fight with perfessionals. Also you can go to jail. but if your gonna fight. go right to the knee cap of the person and shatter it. that will imboilze him. then knock him out with a series of punches to the jaw . agian i must say what i am talking about is dangerous, and i do say not to fight on the street, but if your are gonna fight, then just realize the person your fighting agaisn't is trying to hurt you. also when your in a fight everythign you trained for will just come out, you will not be able to think, so stances doesn't really matter, when you fight it is everything that you trained for.
  5. Not getting in them in the first place. In reality self defense is about getting out of a bad situation quickly and with minimal injuries or LEGAL repercussions. Notice I said legal there's a reason for that. In case you're living in a Steven Segal movie fighting is ILLEGAL and if you started the fight or had a hand in the creation of it you can be charged with anything from a disorderly conduct citation to assault and battery depending on how the injured party and the police feel like pursuing the matter.
  6. Open stance in street fight since you have no idea what your opponent is about. If it is life or death situation as soon as the opponent enter your zone hit hard and do not hesitate until the threat is removed. Any other advice is superfluous since real life street fight is nothing like a match and the stakes are very different.
  7. 1. Run away 2. strike first and hard and keep striking until he's down 3. a kick to the groin is always nice. 4. watch for the knife 5. avoid going to the ground at all costs. If the guy who's your in a fight with has a friend - your in big trouble if your on the ground. 6. Krav Maga - Thats what your looking for.
